JHON  you are almost there i do not think you need a new cam gear . if you go back to your post on 6/25/19 you will see you are were you should be. rotate your crank a few times with inj. unpluged  pull all spark plugs so it is easier to turn by hand  have key on and when you get a spark on number 1 plug look and see where the timeing marks are at this may help .

i must have bee typing at the same time as you .

Since your cam is a RR…..there shouldn’t be any bent valves, John.  AND ~ when you finally get it running right ~ you should probably change the cam timing to 2-degrees retarded (at cam), lol.  <thumbup>

Is your timing belt tight now ? Your timing belt seems to be getting loose somehow.

Yes, it's seems tight now. The old NAPA belt was always loose. You could hear it slapping against the inner timing cover when it ran. Yesterday, I put on a new Gates timing belt. Also, a new tensioner was installed when I got the roadster running about 5 years ago.

Just for shlts & giggles ~ before checking the ign timing ~ double check your firing order (1-3-4-2, clockwise) John…….in case it accidentally got skewed when taking the cap off & on for determining the rotor’s position. <shrug>

Done and done! Fired it up, set the timing and it runs like a top! Many thanks Ray, Landy and Dan......couldn't have done it without you guys!
I guess I screwed up the valve cover gasket when I pulled the VC cuz I have a pretty substantial leak. It's been awhile and I don't remember what the good VC gasket is. The steel one covered in rubber....not FelPro. Does anyone have a link for the proper one?
Thanks again everyone!!

Do you think your last problem was mostly related to ignition timing ?

Yep, that was definitely it.  Once I put the timing belt on, it started up but ran like crap.  Pulled the SPOUT, moved the distributor and set it to 10* BTDC and it runs perfectly!
