I searched the archives and found a short thread
here that asks who's removed the iac. A couple people said they did.
I live in MA with my merkur and it often gets below 0 C during the winter and goes up moderately warm during the summer. How would removing the IAC affect my 88 merkur? I don't really like the high idles when I first start up the car... I want it to stay around 800-1000 rpm at idle. I know the car won't warm up as fast but will there be any other adverse effects? Will it cause any driveability problems?
Thanks

Don't do it. In the cold weather, you'll have to keep your foot into it for some time while it's cold or it will die. Even in warm weather, it will die on a cold start unless you permanently raise the idle.

If you want to see what happens when you remove it, just unplug it (unless it's stuck open). I did this temporarily when I was having problems with mine. It is a pain to not have it on a daily driver, especially a stick.

DPDISXR4Ti is right you might have to keep it alive for a minute when you first start it up. It acts a lot like a carbed motor with a cam.
I personally don't regret removing my IAC though. It helped smooth out my idle. Most days I don't have to sit in the car and warm it up either. Only on the cold mornings (20* or less) will in not idle on its own.

So unplugging it will keep the valve shut? If so I might try doing that and see what it's like.
Thanks

You'd have to unplug it as you revved the engine to ensure it is really closed...right?
It's a motor and it should stop at whatever posistion it's unplugged at and stay there...Could be wrong. :dunno:

unplug it when car is off..i have done this and blocked it off on numerous mustangs..car wont have a "choke" feature anymoer so you have to keep her runing till she is warm..more so on colder days..worth it?it is on some 5.0s to get rid of high idle and slow comming down for a rock solid idle..same can be said for the 2.3 as they use the same on
Function before form. Going fast is looking good!
But he's not suggesting removing it and blocking it off. He's saying he wants to unplug it and drive around to see what removing it and plugging it would be like.

asw long as its closed unpluggint it is the same as blocking it off :dunno:

I unplugged it while the engine was off and then ran a bunch of errands with it. The idle needed to be bumped up a little because it was around 600 rpm and it wasn't too smooth so once I got home I got it up to around 700.
I am very pleased so far though. The idling is great... it goes right back down to idle once I'm on the clutch or in neutral. All I've had to do so far is nurse it for a half a minute or so and then it would stay running. Course, it's pretty warm out today (12*C) compared to some days so I won't know how bad it can be till I have to start it up when it's been sitting all night and it's below freezing.
