Who needs turbos when you have a dyno plot like this????

LOL.

I thought you guys might be interested in how an FI engine acts when you remove the FI portion.

So, for fun, I dynoed the R/T all motor! I disconnected the intercooler hose at the throttle body. When I tried disconnecting it before the IC, the engine was so wheezy it wouldnt even hardly rev past 2500 rpm! I guess the IC is a relatively large restriction when there is no turbo on the other side Smile

One can clearly see the engine tuning on this plot. The cams are set for peak torque around 3000 rpm, then there is a "bump" (maybe from resonance?) a little before 5000 rpm. The dyno operator and I both felt it very clearly during the run. He actually exclaimed "VTEC Baby!".

The ECU does a pretty good job of fueling with no boost as seen in the A/F graph.

However, I think I could have timed the dyno run with a sundial. It takes a long time with no boost to pull 3rd gear (never mind 4th).

I think it is interesting how the peaks (nearly) match up with the max A/F ratios.

see? thats what a proper speed density system does for you. a vam setup would just run pig rich in a similar situation (vam on tb, no turbo). Big Grin
it does show that "lean is mean" for the most part. within a reasonable limit, a lean mixture means more power. we go rich with our turbo setups for safety, not power.
thats very cool tho, i like being able to start my car up for testing, warm up, etc without the ic hoses hooked up too Smile

I think I learned more about this car with this single dyno run than all the others combined. When the masking effects of the turbo are removed, the basic engine characteristics are much clearer.

Function before form. Going fast is looking good!

I ended up going with a TO4E 50 trim / Stage 3 / 0.63 (basically an SC50) with a BB center section. A friend of mine (with higher power goals than me!) is using the SC61 that I bought and I simply swapped into his turbo as it will more than meet my power goals and while still spooling very quickly.

I confess! I wimped out!

400ish whp is plenty for me. My buddy will make better use of the SC61 in his car as he is shooting for 400 whp at no more than 14 psi boost (his car is efficient as all get out...makes wacko power compared to mine as similar boost levels) and 500 whp ultimate goal.
