Best budget slim cooling fan
#1

Hey guys!

So I need to install a new fan setup to go with an aftermarket shorty radiator I'm putting into my '85 Merkur XR4Ti. I've seen a little info here and there about other folks' setups, but I'd like to hear opinions on the matter straight from the community.

In particular, this radiator (http://www.merkur.50megs.com/photo2_1.html) is advertised to have significant cooling capacity over stock. The seller states a single 12" fan should do the job. I've also read elsewhere that a dual 10" fan setup would be better.

Can anyone clarify for me whether a single 12" would do the job, or should I go for dual 10s?

Beyond that, any recommendations on which fans to purchase, and from where?

Or, even better, an alternative replacement from another vehicle. Say, a Saab 900?

I look forward to input! Smile

How slim do you need? I think the Taurus fan on my bird is about 3" thick.
They are readily available in junkyards and flow a lot of air. It is a two speed fan and even wired just for the low speed it keeps my bird below 200 degrees even on a 100 degree day in stop and go traffic. That is with a standard replacement Autozone radiator.

I just went out and got a rough measurement -- about 3 to 4 inches depth, maximum, to the crank pulley. Closer to 3 inches or less, to be safe.

The Taurus fan could be a good choice, if the price is right. I'll look into it.

Thanks!

For the record, I think I'm going to go with either a single 12" or dual 10" fans from siliconeintakes.com

The more of the radiator core and inter-cooler surface you can cover with fan, the better. Two 10" fans should be better than one larger fan.

Don't use the mounting kits with the plastic posts that go through the core, these just tear up the core and fins. Make proper mounting brackets to support the fans from the top and the bottom channels on the core.

A well designed fan shroud is better than no shroud, as it forces the fan-moved air to use all of the core, instead of just the core in front of the fan.

Thanks so much for educating me Gary! Everything you mentioned makes sense, so I'll take that into consideration. Much appreciated!

I just got 2 slim 10" fans off amazon for the saab rad I have in my XR. The saab originals were way too tall for IC piping.

I bought 3 sections of aluminum L stock to make mounting brackets. The fit great and are fairly quiet too. Still off the car but ready to go in when I finish the head work.

btw...they look very similar the the silicone intakes link you posted. Just straight blades instead of curved.

I used a 2 speed volvo fan and shroud in my xr. Picked it up in the salvage yard for cheap. Trimmed the shroud a bit for fittment. Works well here in phoenix heat

+1 to the Volvo fan (same as the Taurus and MkVIII that are so popular with the off roading crowd).

The Volvo fan comes with a relay that should work well with the LA3's high and low fan circuits from the EEC.

I've used the fans from silicone intakes, they work great and are fairly thin for tight installs.....
