Canfield adapter/5.0 T5 on 2.3t
#11

As Stinger said the tunnel is small , so a 5.0 bell is tooo big. To do this you'll need to take out the dash , the box with the heater core. Then the seats , the rug.So the area where there bell is needs to be enlarged . From the fire wall back about 6 inches .Then widen the tunnel 2 inches in the fire wall area. Then the top of the tunnel needs to up 2-3 inches. So try to imagine the tunnel widened out 2-3 inches , from side to side & the top & 5-6 inches back from the fire wall.So put 5.0 bell next to the 2.3 bell , Then you can see how big it needs to be, then add an inch around the 5.0 bell .Plus another thing is the heater core box. It will need to be cut and fixed at the bottom , to fit the over sized tunnel . If you want heat.
I've looked all over for the pics of , but no luck . A 5.0 bell in an XR4Ti is now small undertaking, or for the weak-hearted .
But if your only making 400HP , a Spec stage 4 with a solid hub works well .I ran 30 PSI for 1 week until all the pinon turned to rubble .So it grabbed very well.
So good luck with that, I hope it works out for you.

I'm pretty sure the XR also came with a 302 as well in S. Africa and other areas. I am not sure if there was a manual trans option with that though. I'll check it out.

I have yet to see a stock 302 XR4Ti. It must have had a T9 tranny. A 302 T5 will not fit.

From Wikipedia:
Uniquely, the South African market also saw the introduction of a 5.0-litre XR8 between June 1984 and 1988. A limited number of 250 Sierras were made for the purposes of homologation,[31] as this model was the premier Ford used in Group A racing. The XR8 was fitted with the 302 ci engine from the US Ford Mustang, and the Borg Warner T5 heavy duty transmission. Front brakes were AP Racing four-piston calipers on 280 mm discs. Max power is 209 PS (154 kW) and a top speed of 225 km/h (140 mph) was claimed.[32] The XR8 is easily recognized by having four cooling slats between the headlights, whereas lesser versions were sold with the original smooth front.

It sounds like a company took it upon themselves to make a 302/5t fit into an XR4Ti. So they could run it in a V8 racing venue.Plus just like Wikipedia said " A limited number of 250 Sierras were made for the purposes of homologation "The XR4Ti didn't start off with a V8 in it .The XR4Ti started production in 1979 , they came in 4 doors , pickups & station wagons .It all so sounds like the XR8 was very slow , only 140 MPH, my XR did 150 MPH with only a large vam + T Bird IC
Like Shelby did when building the 428 Mustang , he had to cut and fabricate the shock towers to get the engine to fit. Or like Yenko Camaro , Chevelle , and Nova.
There was all so a company called Scorch. This guy put a Nissan 300 Z twin turboed into an XR4Ti. Super tight suspension , that turned in 1.1 Gs on a skid pad.Ran the quarter in 11 flat.
But the fact still remains you'll need cut out the trany tunnel to make room for the V8 bellhousing , to fit a T5 in there.
I hope you go for it . The V8 bell ,adapter , flywheel + clutch from Stinger , will be 11 lbs lighter + hold way more power.

Billy, what year Xr4ti do you have. There was a small tunnel and a large tunnel xr4 which changed in 87 ish I believe. I was searching for info on the Canfield adapter specific to the xr4 and couldn’t find much info. I do know people that have swapped in 302/t5 combos without major rework of the tunnel on later cars though. So I was sort of under the impression that the Canfield adapter would be a similar scenario. Interested to hear your experience with it though.

I had an 85 , an 08-87/88 & an 88. They all have a small tunnels .Rick Byarns had some good pics of the reworked tunnel. I looked for a few hours to no avail .If you do try to do his , while the trany is out . See if the V8 bell fits in there, if not you will be able to see what needs to be done . I have yet to try it , but my Spec stage 4 clutch still holds great .Ttyl
