Cruise Control on SVO
#1

To All,
Several years ago, I tried to install the Rostra aftermarket universal cruise control but I could never get it to work.  It was probably my lack of electrical knowledge and wiring diagrams.  Knowledge and wiring diagrams have been updated.  So after a 12 hour road trip trying to hold a steady speed, it was time to think about adding cruise control.

While perusing the local pick-u-part, there was a listing for a foxbody mustang and it had a 2.3 and cruise control.  I am wondering and has anyone every taken a cruise control system off of a foxbody mustang and installed it on an SVO?

According to the electrical schematics the 6 pins on the control box is from left to right are for circuits 57, 359, 150, 296, 151, 810 and go to connector 9AB40 (D25B-14489-AA).  It appears that some of the circuits cross over or change to different circuits for instances pin 1 (57) from the controller goes out of the connector as 810, pin 2 (359) comes out to 151.  Does anyone have a list of or know where to find the identifies of these circuits?

Using different search engines and key words did not turn up anything meaningful and the electrical diagrams do not list them.

The connector on the control box accepts two different plugs and looking at the cruise control systems on eBay there is one connector going from the vacuum actuator to the controller and the other connector from the controller goes in a 6 position plug somewhere near the steering column or in the driver side kick panel (this is my guess).  Since our cars have brake and clutch safety switches, I believe the only things I really need to figure out is VSS signal, set, resume and cancel.  My intent is to use the Rostra turn signal as input to the controller.

So has anyone attempted or installed a foxbody cruise control?

Regards,
Harry

Turbo Coupes were available with cruise control also. It's something I've wanted to add to my '84 Capri for long drives. I assume using an appropriate Ford steering wheel would permit keeping the Ford cruise buttons also.

I'm sure all the OEM/Ford cruise-control components designed for a particular vehicle COULD be swapped to a similar or like vehicle ~ BUT, me thinks it would be infinitely easier to install a quality aftermarket CC unit (example = LINK). OTOH, using the OEM components MIGHT require a different "under-dash" wiring harness and possible access to the VSS signal (assuming electronic speedometer).

Also, if trying to implement/use the OEM cruise-control steering wheel, the connection between the st/whl and column would either involve a new 3-ring contact ring & wiring ~ OR a "clock spring", depending upon whether or not the vehicle has an air bag (can't recall when that began in Mustangs). Anyway, it would involve too much work and too many unknowns for my alleged mind. But..... YMMV!  <shrug>

Many moons ago on my '89 Mustang w/2.3, I transferred the CC from my steering wheel to just below the dash cuz I went with an aftermarket Momo wheel.....

If you get the CC from the junkyard Mustang, here's a couple of pics from the factory wiring diagram that may help.  The CC switch is known as the Horn- Speed Control ON/OFF switch.  It looks like #6 goes right to the horn relay (to provide power, I guess).  Both #57's are grounds and #151 goes to the Speed Control Amplifier.  Hopefully, this'll get you started.

To All,
I have most of the parts now and I will be looking again at the wiring diagrams. I also have an 85 Turbo Coupe and when I looked at the electrical drawings for that car, it is wired different than the Mustang, but should give me a general direction. I have and did try to install the Rostra system early on and could not get it to work...probably my lack of electrical knowledge and where to run wires. I am going to try and use the Rostra turn signal mounted control instead of going with the steering wheel controls. I also have there VSS signal generator to use instead of the Turbo Coupes signal generator that is mounted to the transmission...less wires to run.

So now its time to pull the fender, re-read the electrical schematics and make my own crude drawing of the connections needed. I hope to have this down in time to drive to Carlisle and the SVO reunion.

I will take notes and pictures, so that it may help someone in the future...if I get it working.

Regards,
Harry
