I've read that the ones with aluminum centers need water cooling, whereas those made of steel can get by with just oil cooling ~ but.....DUNNO! :dunno: <font color=navy>
correct. mine has and always been water cooled. even my steel center one was.
How did you setup the water cooling? Curious what type of system you ran to achieve that.
i intercept the water line after it comes out of the heater core and goes in and out of the turbo..custom welded hard lines with AN lines going into an out

You still running the oil restrictor? Is that required, I noticed Borg Warner tells you not to use one. What header are you running? Also do you see the need for sequential firing / coilpack upgrade with the bigger e85 injectors?
yes restrictor. this one needs it when you call and actually talk to them. they were the ones who told me to use one, but they didnt sell one.
custom boport 1.25 el, T25 header.
yes sequential fuel with 1600cc injectors. might go to 2000s.
spark is stock mopar quad coil packs in wasted spark configuration

You think I can run 1100s or 1300's off the distributor? Also what size water and oil lines do you run to the turbo? Custom welded by an exhaust shop or?
i dont know
6an coolan
4an oil feed
10an oil return
bo made header

We are talking fill the turbine housing with a puddle kinda oil. kill all the bugs. make kids run indoors. embarrassing to drive kinda smoke.
ill spare the 2 years of on/off testing everything but ultimately it was the turbo infact needs a restrictor . You can only get this restrictor from Germany at the moment but it came quick.
This even came after using TurboXS inline turbo oil regulator that sets oil pressure to 40psi to the turbo and running a 10- to -16 to 1"NPT drain hole in the oil pan!!
https://www.turbozentrum.de/Oil-Feed-Ada...ictor-07mm
is the one i have right now. Stock built in restriction is 2mm. This is .07mm...i also have the 1.6mm that i will try to see if it still doesn't smoke
this is after running a 6258 for years, littlerly had one of the first ones and always loved it with never an issue like this.
so if you have this issue, ignore the documentation, shoot them a call discuss!
I love these EFR turbos and id rather put it out there then people just give up! Keep in mind this is the only turbo in the lineup that i know or can find info on for having this issue. Its the only turbo also that im aware of in the small frame but aluminum center section. The others i this frame size are steel center sections.
Sorry for hijacking an old thread. However, I do have this issue with my efr 7163 turbo. Even though I am running turbosmart oil pressure regulator, which limits pressure to 40-45 PSI. I just want to know that if you are running the restrictor along with the pressure regulator or you are running a restrictor only?
I sold the turbosmart regulator as it didn't help and only use the .7mm restrictor
good luck!

Just want to add i tried a 1.5 restrictor on my 7163 efr. Approximately. 23 psi of oil pressure at idle and 40-50 under boost/ high naturally aspirated rpm and im still smoking during warm unloaded revs. I think im going to drop down to .07mm restrictor as 1.5 was not sufficient.

.
I don't have a dog in this fight ~ BUT....... .07mm is slightly less than 3 thou (.002755906) and therefore very susceptible to getting plugged/restricted by the smallest of particles ~ especially, since virtually all OEM oil-filtering strategies - incl Lima - are "bypass" style and not full flow.
Soooo....... If I were using such a small oil restrictor ahead of my $$$ EFR turbo, I would install an inline 50-micron or smaller "pre-restrictor" oil filter (example below) to prevent such an occurrence. My 2¢...... <shrug>
