OK, its rush hour, rainy, in portland, Or. My cars fuel gauge goes from 3/4 to 1/4 in about a quarter mile at 10 mph. and then the lights dim and die and all electrical functions cease to work. then the car runs like crap until it wont rev up beyond 1300 rpm. Luckily I get the car to the side of the interstate before it craps out. Then on the side of the road the only thing working is the radio.

I get out, pop the hood and the alternator is hotter than heck. Its 630pm now and I havent had time to check anything.

What do you all think it is. It did it once before, however it was not rainy out.

most likely shorted rectifier diodes in the alternator. replace the alternator.

A low battery will kinda "recharge" itself over time (not fully, of course, but sometimes enough to start the engine). More than likely, the alt is not charging sufficiently, as xrattiracer pointed out, and the battery gave it's last dying breath to barely get you to the side of the road on the previous night.

If I were you, I would charge the battery, go immediately to your nearest Kragen, Pep Boyz, Autozoo, etc. and have 'em check the batt and alt. Smile

at the very least, go to a schucks or other autoparts store and have the alternator tested; they usually got a tester they bring out so you dont hafta take the alternator out of the car. might also have them test the battery while theyre at it.

hey change out the plug wires if you change the alternater. they are like 10 bucks and well worth it
once my alternater craped out and my voltage gauge was wigging out and it got really hot and caught on fire. well i didn't know it was on fire i just knew my car crapped out. so i pull into a gas station and pop the hood and sure enough flames pop out. well common sense will tell you that you don't want you car in flames at a gas station pump and so i had to run in and grab a fire extinguisher to put it out and i clogged up my fuel injectors and i am still cleaning that crap out of there!!
