Heat control valve
#1

Looking for a working heat control valve for 1987-88 Turbocoupe.  Valve sits near the firewall, in the hose that lets hot water into the heater core, it has a 2-wire connector on top.   My car has the Electronic Climate Control with digital temperature setting.

Mine is frozen so the heat is stuck on.

Thanks

Please excuse my ignorance, since I've never owned a TC with ACC, BUT....... are you sure it's a valve and not a temp sensor? I've never heard of an electric servo-controlled heater valve on an 80s Ford.  <shrug>  Got a pic? Do any of THESE look familiar?

I don't see a way to post a pic.

I think you put links in your post, but it doesn't let me click on them "(former) '78 2.3T Courier w/blow-thru Autolite 2bbl carb ~ (current) '87 2.3T Ranger w/PiMP’d EFI".

The voltage on the 2-wire connector changes according to the Temp setting.  It supplies 11.0v when Temp is set to 60 deg, and 12.8v when Temp is set to 85 deg.  That's why I believe it's a valve.

Unfortunately, TurboFord has never had a method of posting pics as easily as, say, FB. Pics must be hosted by a pic-hosting service like Photobucket, Google pics, Imgur, etc. Then, the URL (link) of the image can be posted, using the image icon in the taskbar at the top of each posting "box".

As for the ONE. link I posted ("THESE"), I can't explain why you're unable to click on it. It was a link to the result of a Google search = "1987 ford turbo coupe heater control valve"....... with "images" selected (URL posted below). Only a few shown are "electrically controlled", and they don't look like anything I've seen on a mid-80s Ford.

If you wanna find out if your "device" is a water valve vs a temp sender, clamp off the hoses on either side with pairs of needle-nose ViseGrips (or, whatever), pull one of the hoses, and look inside for some kinda movable "blade" that could stop or regulate flow. I wuz wrong once B4, BUT......I doubt you'll see one.  <shrug>

Yes, I will have to take the hoses off to see what is inside the "valve".  I looked at your link - those are heat/hot water valves, but all vacuum controlled.  Mine is just an in & out with two wires on it.

Those links work, George ~ AND, it's definitely a temp sensor ...... not a valve. <shrug>

You are showing the picture of a temperature sensor that is a switch. The purpose of the temperature switch is to prevent the heater fan from running before the coolant is warm. If your heater fan runs, then the temperature switch is not the source of your problem.

Here is a post about the temperature switch from 2002:

Look for Jeff K's 1st response.

If you look for a temperature switch for your vehicle, then Rockauto does carry one:

Soooo......... (in light of the above revelations) your original prob of ".....heat is stuck on" isn't caused by that temp switch, as you thought. If your climate-controlled system doesn't have a hose-mounted valve (generic vac-controlled example pictured below), the issue is probably a stuck "blend door" inside the heater/evaporator plenum under the dash.

Nowadays, vehicles rarely use heater valves, but instead pass coolant thru the heater core at all times. The blend door selectively alters the path of incoming air, so it passes thru JUST the heater core or JUST the A/C evaporator ~ OR, a variable combination of both. IOW, its' position dictates the discharge temp inside the vehicle.

The door could be stuck in the "heat only" position (evap side blocked) due to debris in the plenum, broken/damaged linkage, a faulty electronic controller, a faulty servo, OR - if the servo is vacuum operated (probably) - a damaged/leaking vacuum hose. The servo is externally mounted and MAY be easily accessible. If so, I suggest removing the link from the "crank" and attempting to manipulate the door by hand. GOOD LUCK! <thumbup>

Thanks Ray & Dan. Looks like I'm going to have to pull the dash to see what is up with the blend door and actuator.

Don't be too hasty pulling the dash, George! <eek> Only do that as a last resort. The blend-door actuator is usually mounted to the outside of the plenum and is often accessible/visible either from under the dash or thru the glove-box opening after removing the door & box. <thumbup>
