My SVO swapped fox road course buildup
#1

A buddy of mine had a beat up 87 T top car at his house with an SVO engine in it. He didn't have time to work on it. I was looking for something I could build up to perform well and go to track days with on a reasonable budget. As I tend to...I got a bit carried away.

A week ago the car was basically stock aside from the swap. Since then we've done the following:

tubular k member and front control arms
manual steering conversion rack w/quick ratio
tie rod adaptors with adjustable outer tie rod ends
SN95 front spindles
Cobra R Brembo 13" front brake system
FMIC mounted
All fenders rolled
Front fenders cut for clearance
18X9 Saleen wheels on the front
18X10 Rotas from my Subaru on the back
Toyo R888 road race tires. 265 front 295 rear.
poly transmission mount
new battery
manual brake conversion
Sparco wheel with quick release
6 point cage welded in (so far...we're adding a rear X soon and then more later)
5 point cam lock harnesses and Corbeau seats
Pro 5.0 shifter
Centerforce dual friction clutch
MM torque arm, panhard bar, swaybars, links bushings
full length weld in subframe connectors w/gussets
fuel cell
bosch pump, aeromotive filters
Removed the whole stock fuel system
Lincoln mk7 8.8 rear end assembly
We drilled out the rear hubs and put ARP extended studs in. The front ARP studs went right in.
Cobra rear brakes
MM coilover conversion, rear control arms
wideband, EGT, boost, fuel level gauges installed
Megasquirt 2 built and EEC board built
removed bumper beams, a/c related parts, water cooled oil filter housing and intake manifold coolant hoses, some of the sound deadening, head liner and carpeting.
wilwood brake proportioning valve.
stinger exhaust manifold
HX35
ranger alternator conversion

to install:
40bob intake, TB, fuel rail setup
pyropete EDIS conversion parts
140lb injectors
CDI box, 4 blaster ss coils, and custom MSD wires we'll make to length
Tial BOV
hydraulic e-brake (for drifting/horsing around)
-8 fuel feel line, -6 return, Aeromotive FPR
cobra master cylinder
custom oil cooler
radiator/fans (maybe..it has a truck rad. in it now)
oil pressure and temp. gauges

to fabricate:
intercooler piping and intake
and we need to mod the exhaust the car came with a bit
rear firewall since I have a fuel cell
finish blow down fuel cell vent tube (we stuck a nitrous blow down tube on it, but it's not quite long enough)

Things I need:
solid or much stiffer engine mounts

I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch because this has all happened rather fast. Hopefully it won't be more than a couple weeks before we fire it up.

We leakdown tested it and unfortunately the engine is pretty hammered so I won't push the tune too hard this season and we'll take care of the engine over winter.

I'm planning to put a coat of primer on it before driving it and deal with the paint and body issues over winter.

The injectors and fuel system are beefed up so much because after I get it running on gas I'm planning to switch it to a special fuel I've had blended which requires more fuel volume to air than E85.

We'll corner balance and align it once it's all together and then it's getting fired up and put straight on our dyno for tuning. I'm putting it on the road so I can shake it down a bit before going to the track. Who am I kidding...I'm going to take it on on the street sometimes...just not on these tires as I won't make it far. Smile

I'll take some better pics when I can.

Thanks to nikuk and zer0daze for their guidance since we haven't modded an SVO setup before.

Wow, looks like a pretty crazy build.

Great to see another roadrace/open track build. I would suggest that you add an Accusump and you may wish to add a water/alky setup. The engines tend to rattle when they heat soak. You can make some solid engine mounts using moroso's 5.0 solid mount kit and the stock engine mounts. Insulate the intercooler piping, you'd be surprised how much heat is introduced into the intake charge by the radiator.

It doesn't appear that you've built it with a particular class or sanctioning body in mind.

Have fun, and be safe.

Please post more pics!!

Thanks guys!

Horsewidower I have a 2 qt Accusump here which I'm not using in my other cars so I'll swap it over.

I won't need water/alky with the fuel I'm running. Sorry I know I'm being a bit cryptic about it on purpose. I can tell you that there's no gas in it. Wink

I ran meth injection on a few of my cars in lieu of an intercooler at high boost levels and use it on many customer cars so I'm not opposed to it, but I shouldn't need it on this setup and I'm trying to keep it simple where possible. I'll be watching charge temps and if they're getting too high I'll reconsider meth injection. I have a 3 gallon cell set up for meth injection from one of my Subaru projects along with a Coolingmist meth kit so I can always toss that on later.

Thanks for the tip on the mounts. I'll give that a shot.

I've never been a big fan of building to a strict class unless you have a big budget race team. I'd rather build it so it does what I want. It will have the usual safety equipment because I want it to whether it's required or not. I'll lap in a non competitive fashion until I'm confident enough in the setup and my driving to enter time attack events where there's a class for pretty much anything. If it gets dumped into unlimited RWD that's fine with me.

I got some DTC70 pads for the front and DTC60's for the rear. We'll see how they work and then add ducting as necessary.

I'll work on more pics.

So I have to ask...am I the first guy to put Rotas on a Mustang? LOL

That torque arm/panhard bar is one sexy setup.

Megasquirt which I'm seriously regretting. It was presented to me as a plug and play setup for the SVO harness, but when I got it that wasn't even remotely correct. It's been a huge headache and I would have much rather just wired in my ViPec V88 standalone that I have here. Then I'd have a nice new harness. Now that we've fought with the megasquirt in getting it together I'm planning on using that.

There are a lot of megasquirt resources here. If you have questions post them up.

I use a Haltech, so I'm pretty useless on MS.
