Near drop-in turbo for 250-300hp?
#1

Hi gang,
I've been absent for a while since my combo has been fully sorted for quite some time now. But... yesterday my hybrid Mitsubishi/Garrett T3 turbo took a crap (after working well since 2007).  I probably have enough parts in my turbo boneyard to cobble something together with a TB0305 turbine and TB0348 compressor, but instead of fooling around with designs from the 70s and 80s, I'm wondering if there's anything newer that matches the 2.3 exhaust flange and has a similar space claim and downpipe location.  Specific recommendations, or links to up to date resources would be much appreciated.  Goal is street drivability and full boost by 3000rpm, not max power.
Cheers!

Hi Geoff, Borg-Warner is making some new turbos that work well on our 2.3Ts.
I'm not up on this technology yet so I can't make an informed recommendation.
Contact Wes Kiser, I believe he has the info you're looking for.

Thanks for the hint Paul. I just looked at the Borg Warner aftermarket catalog and the EFR 7064-B looks like a pretty good fit, but not cheep!! Way out of my budget in fact. And I worry that the only available turbine A/R 0.83 will spool way too late for my preference.
Garrett has a GT3076R that looks like a good fit, with 0.63 A/R turbine housing option, but I don't see much advantage of this over my old junk. Not cheep either. The rotor diameters are about the same, and efficiencies only a little better.
I guess I'll see what I can find in my junkpile.

Sorry, I forgot to warn you about the prices, none of them are inexpensive now. Like you, I' glad I have a 'junkpile' to source parts from.

Honestly you cant go wrong with the old 50 trim t3 t4 for that power range on pump gas. That EFR you were looking might be a tad muchl. with the EFR 6258 i made 420/440 to the wheels and with the EFR 7163 i made 502/554 to the wheels. the 7163 i still have a decent amount left in it. the 6258 i was making more power after chasing spring issues also. with my current turbo, although no recommended , i can make 30PSI at 2900-3000 rpms. They are great turbose
Function before form. Going fast is looking good!

Appreciate the comments.  I will probably go with my TB0305 compressor and turbine, that are gathering dust somewhere in my garage.

It supports about 10-15psi and ~200hp more than a 60-trim T3. Modern wheels move a lot more air and support much higher pressures than the old designs. Probably not necessary for your application though.

I'm also looking for a new turbo for the Capri. No racing, no hero dyno pulls. More power is better but not at the expense of excellent street manners since the Capri gets driven to Radwood shows (up to 2000 miles round trip). Faster spooling at low revs will make the car more fun.

As mentioned, the Garrett and Borg Warner ones look ideal but those prices are steep. The EFR 6258 is a T25 inlet flange so it would not be "drop in"?
