OK, so I thought about an SRT-4 computer before realizing that I don't want to play with the OBD stuff. I still like the Mopar stuff, but I'm not sure about how much support there is for it.
I have a few friends with DSMs and they have some good running cars. The first gens are non-OBD-II cars, and the stuff is pretty cheap. An N/A harness just needs 4 wires added to use a turbo computer, and the computers are a little more than an LA3 (~$100). Then there are the sensors and things, which I don't know THAT much about. It does use a 5v reference, so something might be able to be re-used.
The hard parts I'm thinking will be the cam and crank angle sensors and the ignition stuff.
Any of you guys have any input on this? If you're gonna try and shoot it down, I want to know specifically WHY some part won't work. And I AM considering other stuff, like a Holley Commander, but I just want to ask about this kind of stuff before I go spending large amounts of cabbage, you know? Thanks.

it uses a hall sensor for the crank and a cam sensor, both would be to much of a hassle to even worry about. just get a j3 chip any p series ecu and go from there. alot of the dsm guys buy dsm link to tune there cars and that is about as much as a eec tuner. J3 $60, p series ecu $15 at a yard. then you could find a 80mm maf $10-100(depends where you get one) and just pay someone here on the board to burn you a chip for your application. or you could buy a burner your self later on down the road with pcmx software and your set. so it could be as cheap as $75 or up to $400 if you got the j3,p ecu,80mm maf, iat, burner, and PCMX.
I knew that you could do that with the J3 stuff, but I was wondering how good the MAF translator funtions were? Last I heard they didn't work out all THAT well.
That sure would be a whole lot easier though, yeah...haha

the maf translator is terible. I know several people who run it. and the problem is that is has no temp sensor, wich causes it to run good when you tune it but when the weather changes you have the change the settings constantly. its so tempermentle that when you tune it during the day when its warm. it will run like ass at night when it cools off. its a bandaid in my opinion. but if you don't mind tuning your car all of the time go for it.
Errr...OK, so you're suggesting something that you know is bad?
Maybe I asked the wrong thing... Using a stock P series eec with a J3 adapter and a chip burned to run a MAF sensor DOES work well, no?

ok my bad the dsm guys have a box that is called a MAF Translator that they use to run GM maf sensors instead of the stock maf.
yes the j3 with the p series and 80mm maf works great. there are several people here on the board that use it. there are also severl bin files set up that were on tuner23. the j3 will do everthing a eec-tuner can do except the data logging feature, and you have to burn a bin file to a chip instead of loading a bin file to the tuner. they use the same software.
Roger that... I thought that was what you meant. Thanks!

The DSM translator locks the IAT at a certain temp,63 degrees i think. So you tune it for that and then it needs minimal tuning unless you have DRASTIC temp changes.then any setup will need a slight tweaking..
Many people run the MAFT setup with great results. The thing is you need a chip or SAFC to fine tune them.Without that they can be a pain to tune.Especially if you have real big injectors.
I run a custom chip/SAFC on my DSM and like it alot so far.I might go MAFT later on but i want to see what i can get out of the 2G MAS first..
Good luck..
Steve
I had a maf translator on my 1g dsm, it ran great, regardless of temp. The factory dsm karman sensor is like a vam in that it measures volume, and then uses pressure and temperature to calculate mass flow. To function correctly with any kind of maf you must eliminate this. The maf translator is great, but you really need to be able to datalog to get the trims set correctly. I used a pocketlogger. I had much better luck with the maft than with the safc I used before I got it. But this is off topic, ford computer with j3 and maf is great, keep it.

I think Dodge is the ONLY OEM manufacturer that suppports it's turbo cars with computer upgrades. You can still buy "super 60" or Mopar Performance computers for their 80's cars. And it's speed/density and programmable. Ask xrattieracer(Jason).
If the DSM computers are Mess Air, sounds like it from your's and others posts, then they won't be very turbo friendly. If you're going to the trouble of rewiring at least make it worth it and get a speed/density system. Look here-
