If you are sure everything is disconnected, get a two foot chunk of 2x4 and a blacksmith hammer (you know a heavy-headed hammer you swing with one hand)and smack on the side of the head, using the 2x4 like a big drift punch. This will break the seal on the head gasket, and you can lift it off.
Yep, what rick said.

If the motor is in the car, and the batt and starter hooked up ad the spark plugs are still in, just crank it over for a second or two, and the compression pressure will pop it loose. Works every time.

Or...If the engine is still in the chassis, hook up the battery and crank it, be sure all of the other systems are disconnected from the solenoid first though.

Are you two "great minds" talkin' about leaving the t/belt connected, or, do you rotate the cam to a particular position to ensure that a couple of cyl's have the valves closed? If you say it works, then I'm sure it does - personally, I've never had a head that didn't pry off. On the difficult ones, I usually place a crowbar between the top of the w/pump and front overhang of the head.

No, the timing belt is disconnected when doing this. Cam position doesnt really matter, as at least one cyl will always have the valves closed, and all it takes is one cyl with compression to pop it loose. Next time you pull a head, try it... no grunting, prying, hammering involved, and it literally takes 2 seconds to pop the head loose. Works just as well on OHV V8s also, but just put a few head bolts back in a few turns so the head doesnt slide off when it breaks loose!

LOL - Years ago, I heard about a campaign to replace the h/gaskets on 440 (426?) Dodge/Plym CHP freeway interceptors cuz they were having problems with preignition (these were 180mph cars). Anyway, it seems that the heads were almost welded on - so the techs came up with a solution which involved removing all the head bolts and
STARTING THE MOTOR! - lol. Needless to say, the heads popped right off (don't know what damage, if any, was incurred by the dowels - since the intake was left bolted up).

BTW, during the same era (late 60's), I once visited Parker Center police hdqt's in LA with a friend's dad, who was a lieutenant with the LAPD, and saw another freeway chaser which was a '64 Pont with a HD421 engine that was fitted with twin Paxtons - each feeding it's own AFB carb - It sounded awesome!!
