spark plug gaps
#1

this may seem like a rather simplistic question, but what spark plug gap is recommended for these motors, have a miss fire at 3000 to 4000 rpm and 15psi boost,is this my problem? thank you t.trepanier

I like .032 on my drivers and .035 on my projects that get taken care of a little better.

Dont run platnuim plugs! Get the cheapy motorcraft asfw32's .

A miss is usually the wires which seem to crap out on these cars pretty fast. Stck to the motorcraft plugs wires and cap/rotor and you will be happy you did.

If the miss does not go away, do a code scan.

On my car I had to drop the gap down to .025 but I am running pretty high boost 20-24psi. I would start by closing the gap down to .025 and increasing it in stages until the car runs bad again then close it up to where it ran good.
Good luck

This is true I put platinums on my engine and it right away caused a miss and I think the burned too hot too because my head gasket eventually burned up as well between cyls. I replaced the head gasket and put stock Motocraft plugs/ wires/ acap and rotor. It runs better than when I bought it.

A note about platinum plugs. For use in any vehicle, the plugs have a lower internal resistance than the standard plug. If they are gapped at recommemded specs, they may cause a misfire, or weak fire as there is not enough resistance to get the voltage up for a hot spark, ie., the spark can easily jump the narrow gap with not enough energy to properly ignite the fuel mixture.

The trick is to widen the plug gap increasing the resistance the ignition circuit "sees", and the circuit will raise the voltage to jump the gap giving the hotter spark.

Another vote for AWSF32C plugs at .030.

If you have a higher RPM miss, look to the plug wires, cap and rotor also. Some brands of wires many consider to be "good" quality wires dont work well on 2.3Ts. Bosch wires come to mind... no one, including me, has had decent luck with these wires. You cant go wrong with the Motorcraft wires (#WR4011C), and Motorcraft cap and rotor. Run codes, and look for a continuous memory code 14: intermittant PIP. This could be caused by a bad PIP generator, or more likely, from EMI from the plug wires, cap or rotor.

I tried platinum plugs in my car, I couldnt get them to run correctly at all. Whaen I first got them i tries a .030 gap which caused a mis so I did like you said and the plug manufacturer recommended and gapped them to .040 still no change tried them all the way to .050 and then the engine wouldnt go past 4500 rpm it just fell flat on its face. I gapped the stupid plugs back to .030 because that is were they ran the best and I was going on a road trip. on the trip going up hills the car would mis bad and felt like it was running out of fuel, It wasnt it was the crappy spark plugs, I had to gap them down to .020 just so I could get up the freaking mountain! The first town I came to after getting up the mountain I stoped at the Checker and bought a set of autolites put them in and didnt have any problems the rest of the trip.
