A turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.
In Europe this is a common thing, turn your car off at red lights. And they also have yellow lights to signal the light is turning green.

That's what I told him...having watch both options on a 4bbl carb V8 with the aircleaner off...I was hoping for some hard numbers from the MS...something like a 35lbs injector at X pulse with uses Y amount of fuel per minute at idle and the startup enrich is X% over idle of 15second blahblahblah.

A good friend of mine was in India a few years ago and one of the things that amazed him was everyone cut off their vehicle at stop lights (motorcycles to city buses).
In Europe, it's sort of a toss up ... waiting for a train, or long light they turn them off, a city light they genrally don't. In europe you also get the yellow before green (and you best be moving on green).
China nobody turns off, but fuel is realtively cheap (subsidized) but they have the COOLest lights ... They are a maybe 6 segment light. When it's green going to yellow, it start to fad down then turns yellow. Yellow fades down to Red ... red is on steady, then start to fade down to green. You can effectively predict when someone is going to ruin the red and run your ass over.
India ... no freaking idea ... They shut them off, they let them run, key is that the horn works because you will beblowing it, even if it seemingly adds nothing to the operation. Abosultely the most chaos I have ever seen in my life was afternoon traffic in Bangalore ... everyone leaving work for Indian companies, everyone going to work as tech support for US comanaies, sort of a dual rush hour ... simply can not be described.

If you did that here in the Metro Detroit area, you would never get the answer, because when you came out, the car would be gone.
I think all you have to do is datalog what you are talking about and then put in on a spreadsheet and let the computer do the math.
If you looked at all the dynamics it takes to idle. The throttle gets a bump because the fan kicks in. Thus the Idle PW is increased with load. A well tuned car starts with the pass of only one or two cylinders.
I say a hot engine would surely use less fuel by shutting down.
Previous owner of two TurboFords, Now the owner of a lot of spare parts that are looking for a new project.
Some semi have to have the engine on because other stuff are relying on the engine to run. I am not sure if it is released yet, so I cannot say, but I know a company was working on a technology to run the other functions when the engine is off. If I am not mistaken I think that it is illegal in some states for even semi to have the engine running/idling for an extended period

New BMW's have the start/stop at lights feature in their cars.
Simple math.... pw is X went running warm.... just start enrichment is NOT 2 X for any given time... the just started value is much lower... And the O2 sensor will start switching in less than a minute....
I am never gassed up in a minute or less.... 4 or 5 mins is more like it.
MYTH BUSTED..... Shut it off....
