What are the head options now?
#1

If someone was gonna turn up their 2.3, what are the options for a head now?  I see Boport has some CNC stuff, but that is still using stock castings.  Research seems to indicate that Esslinger crap canned the 2.3 head, and it feels like they are focusing on newer stuff and the 2.3L Lima stuff can be handled by "race engineering"... not sure if they are just dumping old stock or what.

Does anyone know if someone has or is gonna pick up the aluminum 2.3L Lima head market or is it dead?

I would be surprised if someone new picks up the aluminum market. There is a very large investment (and a large amount of knowledge about castings, cylinder head design, and airflow) required to get started and there is no "one-size-fits-all" head design that would be best for everyone. There are used Esslinger heads available when desired even if the new ones dry up. The ported iron heads will support the power of 99.9% of people with these engines as the number of people who have exceeded 700hp is about a dozen over the last 35 years. I'm not saying 700hp is the limit for an iron head either. How much you wanting to make?

Does anyone have an update on the new Iron head development that was discussed in the last year?

Hmmmm...........got a link to that discussion, Howard ~ I don't remember it?

Rapido developed and sells (used .to sell?) an aluminum Lima head, but it is/was meant as a stock-replacement version with only marginal .improvements in flow and I don't know what its' potential for porting is.

As Shannon (Stinger) said, I too would be shocked if anyone is/was developing an aftermarket aluminum or iron head for "our" 46-year-old 2-valve dinosaur engine, because the demand simply isn't enough to warrant that big of an investment. BUT (as he also said)......if you look/search hard enough, you can find used Essy street or race heads somewhere "out there".  <shrug>

Yeah, time flies...Dave Flanders started the thread in 2013, with the last comment, by some guy named Turbo Ray, in June of 2017...Tim O, was looking into developing a new head.

Aaaahhhh, YES......the short-lived "RHEA" iron head! Doubt if you'll find any/many of those laying around or for sale. OTOH, new/bare iron heads ARE currently being produced, albeit in DPH form = LINK. They're claimed to have thicker decks & port walls, plus hardened seat inserts & "smoother" ports(?) ~ BUT, DUNNO!   <shrug>
