Yeah.....it seems likely that it would've thrown a code. Have you scanned it? Stupid questions: (1) Does the CEL illuminate with key on engine off?  (2) Does it throw a code if you start the engine with, say, the ACT sensor disconnected? (3) What kinda smog test do they use in CO (sniffer? rollers/dyno?)

Obviously, you can check for continuity in the wiring with a DVOM or test light. If one or both of those 43 &/or 46 wires are open.......you could also temporarily run a separate wire from the EEC to the VAM (thru the door jamb and hood opening) just to see if that gets rid of the 3K rpm ceiling.  <shrug>

The XR4Ti does not have a check engine light. I pulled codes before putting the break out box in, and I had my usual KOEO codes 81, 83, 85, 88. All codes no to worry about as they all have to do with things that are not present, such as, IRCM, and auto trans solenoids. Continuous codes at KOEO produced only code 27- VSS. Makes sense since again its not connected. I did not do KOER, I gotta buy "she who must be obeyed" more chocolates before I can do that LOL. This house just isn't as conducive to working on cars as the old one. No room for lots of cars, and our bedroom is directly above the garage. Shes amazed I haven't had the cops called on me for revving the engine in the garage. I told her to give it time, this state will be fully californicated soon enough LOL

Smog test here is IM240 "rolling road test" on a dyno. I should post my last numbers they were lower than they've ever been. Of course it is a brand new 3 way cat, so I expect that. Probably would've passed the first time if someone that knew how to drive a manual was driving it for the first test that day Rolleyes

No CEL's on Merks, eh? I believe you, Johnny ~ BUT.......it's totally ridiculous that an 86 OBD1 vehicle sold in the US would lack one. I can't even imagine that being EPA-legal. Oh well! Regardless, it seems that you've got wiring issues since continuity apparently doesn't exist between the EEC and at least one of your sensor circuits (VAM).

That means that the ECU has no way of quantifying any increased air consumption past, say, idle (or whatever default/limp-home strategy is built-in based on TPS reporting) and the engine is going WAY lean around your 3K rpm "ceiling".......DUNNO! GOOD LUCK!  <thumbup>

Yep it was totally legal for all XR4Tis built from 85-89 to not have a CEL. I remember back in the 90s some of the guys on the old IMON list from California complaining about failing smog for a lack of CEL. They had to pull out their owners manual and show the techs that there was in fact no CEL at all. By the time Calirado jumped on the IM240 bandwagon news must've got round that the XRs had no CEL, as I've never once gotten grief form the people at smog about a lack of CEL.

I'll be looking at the VAM wiring to the EEC in between batches of x-mas cookies this weekend.

It might help if I was looking at the right wires  Dodgy I was using my EEC-IV handbook to see the approx values, and the pin outs he has on that page dont match what he shows in the list comparing all the turbo eecs. The page that compares the eecs matches my recently acquired vol H for the pin outs. The vol H I have does need updating though, as it does not show the right pin out in the VAF pinpoint test. It does show correct pins at VAT pinpoint test.

Needless to say with break out box installed, and the right pins looked at, I get nice smooth .25 volts from closed vam to 4.75 volts wide open vam with my analog volt meter.

BAP still has plug on, no hose connected and it shows correct frequency for my altitude.

Have not driven car since regapping plugs to .025" from .032". Maybe Monday. I need to look at t-stat as I had no heat after 15 min drive at sub 40° ambient temp. I have brand new heater core.

If re-gapping the plugs from .032 to .025 helps.......it PROBABLY means that your coil is not outputting the amount of spark energy that it's supposed to, Johnny. I don't recall Ford's recommended plug gap for a 2.3T (is it listed on the underhood decal?), BUT......under normal driving conditions ~ especially when not at WOT ~ .032 is probably  a small-enough to allow revving the motor to redline.  <shrug>  Looking forward to receiving the Christmas cookies, lol.  <thumbup>  Smile

Need an address and list of food allergies if any for cookies  Smile

Coil is 35 yrs old, son i wouldn't be surprised if its ready to be replaced. The decal on the XR says .032"-.036". I went with .032" figuring my coil could be tired. I usually split the difference, but thats the machinist in me trying to hit nominal Wink
