WTB: Driveshaft Slip Yoke Dampner
#1

Looking for the driveshaft slip yoke dampner assembly for a 1987 turbo coupe with a T5 manual transmission.  Not sure if the Auto and T5 have the same output shaft spline.  Ideally someone would know for sure if you happen to have one from an Auto that it would indeed work on the T5.  Would like to see the condition of the dampner ring assembly as the outer ring on mine came off and don't want one that will fail in a short period of time.

They are fine without them. I've never noticed any difference running with or without. Also, all of them are the same age as yours so the rubber is 35 years old and likely to fail soon in any used one.

On a previous turbo coupe I had the driveshaft balanced and the yoke replaced with a plain slip yoke and had a noticeable vibration when in 4th gear at slow speeds when accelerating (not really lugging the motor but at a pretty low rpm ~ 35mph)... I always attributed that to the missing dampner.  Now I really haven't noticed much difference when the outer ring came loose, it did happen while driving on the freeway ~ 80mph. There was a bit of drivetrain vibration, then all of a sudden bam, things smoothed out.  Was looking in the rear view mirror as I was sure something flew off, but nothing.  I don't even remember how long ago that was, but it's been a while.  Just happened to be under the car and checking things out and noticed the dampner outer ring up around the trans tailshaft.  Took off the driveshaft and removed the ring, the tailshaft seal dust boot got ripped some and I have one coming to replace that and thought I would do the u-joints too.

I was looking at getting the dampner rebuilt at one of the harmonic balancer rebuild shops but haven't contacted them about it...  I may just clean it up (still some rubber on it) and change out the u-joints.  Don't see any reason to replace the slip yoke with a new plain one but If I can find an original slip yoke dampner reasonably priced I may look into getting one rebuilt depending on how much that may cost.
