XR4 Heater help!!!
#1

My 89 XR4 is having heater issues! When I first got it the heater core was plugged up (Rad. stop leak). I flushed it out so water flows through it good, and replaced the thermostat. The heater control valve is working good.

Sometimes (most of the time) I get no heat. The Vacc. hose going to the controls has been broke off by the previous uwner trying to install a stereo and I don't know where it goes.

I get vents only and the speed changes in relation to the vehicle speed (mph) this leads me to think the blend doors are in the wrong position. Will a new Vacc. SW fix this? or does it seem there is more to it? Car gets to opperating temp just fine.

THANX

The heater valve only makes it so the A/C doesn't fight the heater. Mine is removed along with the A/C. the doors may not be opening closing right but that means that under boost with the fan off you'll gat air pushed through at speed. I think it's just the core. get a good one from an 87 and up car. I did and love it.

In the 87 we had a couple years ago, we had every problem but the heater core. The heater valve in the egninge compartment was bad and there was no vaccuum supply to the heater controls so the blend doors would not work properly. The engine was hot and the core was clear, but no heat the longer you drove. I'd get the vacuum fixed...

If your A/C is removed delete the heater valve first. Cleans up the engine bay nice.

Hey Pac, what if I got rid of the valve but left the a/c in place? I dont have the belt on the copmressor and plan on removing it all when I actually do some mods to the engine.. is it goin to blow up? Also, I dont get all that much heat.. I can tell that air is warmer when I turn on the heat but lord its not heat.. I can live with it though.. warm seats feel better than warm air.. especially if you work for a lawn company and have body pains all the time.. its like sitting on a big heat pad.. wheres the heater core?? I might check to see if is plugged up.. I have put a couple things of stop leak in my engine in the past couple months after changine the radiator 3 times..

Lemme re-phrase that.. if you never plan on using he A/C again you can remove the heater valve.

The A/C weighs something like 100 pounds all together. Ick. Almost all of it ahead of the front axle line.

well since were in Texas were gonna keep the AC, I'll change out the vacc. sw. and get back to ya.

The core is NOT plugged....I can run water through and it flows real good.

Even non plugged cores suck at making heat. I've replaced my XR heater already... and it wasn't plugged. Boom. Hella heat.

Just don't use CLR to clean it out. It eats the plastic tanks and metal enough to make it leak.

will lime away work ok? or should I use vinegar on mine? swapping the ihi on next week or this weekend and will have the heater hoses off so I figured it would be a good time to clean mine as I have no heat too.
